As you may know, Lions worldwide are known as “Knights of the Blind”.  In 1925 a blind deaf lady by the name of Helen Keller addressed the Lions at an International Convention and challenged them to take up the battle to eradicate blindness.  Today, approximately one and a half million Lions carry on the crusade against darkness and support eye sight conservation as their main focus.

The Guelph Lions provide many different services for the seeing impaired within our own community.  The Lions provide free eye glasses for any person in need who can not afford them in Guelph.

The Lions have purchased all the lazer eye equipment at the Guelph Hospital.

Many Guelph Lions volunteer their time on a weekly basis to provide kindergarten children’s eye screening in the local schools every year, using equipment purchased by our District Lions Clubs.

This screening promotes parental awareness of potential sight problems in their children, which may otherwise go undetected in the early stages.

On a wider horizon, the Lions sponsor Dog Guides, which include Seeing Eye Dogs, Hearing Dogs, and Special Needs Dogs.  We support a breeding facility at Breslau, where the puppies are born.  At a few weeks of age, volunteer Lions and other people foster the puppies for several months, during which time they are exposed to public situations, medical check ups and preliminary training.  The dogs then complete their training at a Lions Foundation Dog Guide school in Oakville.  The recipients and their new Dog Guides spend about three weeks together at the school, getting to know one another, before “graduating”.  The Lions Dog Guides are provided absolutely free to the people who receive them, and currently we turn out about 100 trained dog guides annually.  Currently, there is still a long list ( about a two year back log) of people waiting to receive a Dog Guide.

All these worthy projects are made possible by your donations and support.  We sincerely thank you for your previous support of the Lions Eyesight Conservation Trust, and beseech you to again consider a contribution this year.  Every dollar you donate goes towards these projects – all the administrative costs are covered by the Lions personally.

More than ever, your generous donation to the Guelph Lions Eyesight Conservation Trust can help make a difference in the lives of others who need our help.  Thank you for sharing in our noble cause.

“The best things in life cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt within the heart”.
–Helen Keller
